The Arsht Center's November: God of Carnage, Common With Nu Deco, Lucia di Lammermoor, and More
November at the Adrienne Arsht Center opens with Día de Muertos and builds through a month-long run of Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage, opera, tango, bossa nova, and a landmark collaboration between Common and Nu Deco Ensemble.
Part of our ongoing curation of what it means to live, love, and play in the Magic City.
November at the Adrienne Arsht Center is anchored by a long theatrical run and punctuated by a series of concerts that span bossa nova, tango, opera, hip-hop, and Spanish guitar. It is one of the more varied months the venue has programmed, and several of the individual events are worth planning around well in advance.
The month opens on Sunday, November 1 with Journey to Día de Muertos at Knight Concert Hall — a free musical celebration of the holiday, beginning at 3:00 PM, with RSVP required. It is a fitting way to begin a month that leans heavily into Latin and classical traditions.
God of Carnage takes over the Carnival Studio Theater from November 5 through November 22, with performances nearly every day of the run. Yasmina Reza's Tony Award-winning play — a razor-sharp comedy about two sets of parents who meet to resolve a dispute between their children and rapidly lose all pretense of civility — is one of the most reliably entertaining works in the contemporary theater repertoire. The Carnival Studio's intimacy makes it an ideal setting. Showtimes vary by day: Thursday and Friday evenings at 7:30 PM, Saturdays at 2:30 PM and 7:30 PM, Sundays at 2:30 PM, with additional Wednesday performances on November 11.
On Friday, November 6, Knight Concert Hall presents Jobim and the Music of Brazil at 8:00 PM — an evening devoted to the bossa nova canon of Antônio Carlos Jobim, whose compositions remain among the most enduring in twentieth-century popular music. The following evening, Saturday November 7, the same hall hosts Quinteto Astor Piazzolla at 8:00 PM. The ensemble carries forward the tango nuevo tradition of Piazzolla himself, and a back-to-back weekend of Brazilian and Argentine music at the Arsht is a rare alignment.
Wednesday, November 12 brings one of the month's most distinctive pairings: Common With Nu Deco Ensemble at Knight Concert Hall at 8:00 PM. Common — rapper, actor, activist, and one of the most thoughtful voices in hip-hop over the past three decades — performs alongside Miami's own Nu Deco Ensemble, the chamber orchestra that has built a reputation for dissolving the boundaries between classical, jazz, and contemporary music. The collaboration is the kind of event that tends to exceed expectations.
Florida Grand Opera brings Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor to the Ziff Ballet Opera House for three performances: Saturday, November 14 at 7:00 PM, Sunday, November 15 at 3:00 PM, and Tuesday, November 17 at 8:00 PM. Lucia is one of the most demanding soprano roles in the repertoire, and the opera's final act — the famous mad scene — remains one of the most emotionally overwhelming sequences in all of opera. On the same evening as the opening night, November 14, Knight Concert Hall presents Mozart's Requiem at 8:00 PM.
The month closes on Sunday, November 22 with Barcelona Guitar Trio & Dance at Knight Concert Hall at 4:00 PM — flamenco guitar and dance in a concert hall setting, a combination that tends to feel both intimate and theatrical at once.
Tickets for all Arsht Center performances are available at arshtcenter.org or by calling 305.949.6722. The center is located at 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami.
