Billy Joel made his first South Florida appearance since 2009 at BB&T Center in Sunrise on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 — the six-time Grammy winner and one of the highest-grossing touring artists in the world.
Having ended a three-year live performance hiatus with a moving appearance at New York's 12-12-12 concert for victims of Hurricane Sandy, Joel had returned to the stage in a big way. He had headlined The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April 2013, performed in Europe for the first time in seven years, and in December 2013 received The Kennedy Center Honor — one of the United States' top cultural awards. He had also been honored by Steinway & Sons with a painted portrait in Steinway Hall in Manhattan, the first non-classical pianist to be immortalized in the collection.
Having sold over 150 million albums globally, Billy Joel was the sixth best-selling recording artist of all time and the third best-selling solo artist. His music had served as the inspiration and score for the hit Broadway play Movin' Out , which took home two Tony Awards. He had played the final concerts at Shea Stadium to more than 110,000 fans, documented in the 2010 film The Last Play at Shea .
