Formula 1 officially confirmed the Miami Grand Prix in April 2021, with the race set to debut at a purpose-built circuit around Hard Rock Stadium in May 2022. The announcement ended years of negotiations and false starts, and confirmed what Miami had long believed: that the city's combination of glamour, international character, and sporting infrastructure made it a natural home for the world's most prestigious motorsport series.
The Miami Grand Prix circuit, designed around the Hard Rock Stadium complex in Miami Gardens, would be a street circuit in the traditional Formula 1 sense — not on public roads, but on a purpose-built track that wound through the stadium's parking lots and surrounding areas. The design was ambitious, the logistics were complex, and the timeline was tight. But the commitment was real, and the excitement was genuine.
For Miami, the Formula 1 announcement was another signal of the city's growing status as a global sports destination. In the space of a few years, Miami had added the Formula 1 Grand Prix to a calendar that already included the Miami Open, the Miami Dolphins, the Miami Heat, the Miami Marlins, and Inter Miami CF. The city was becoming, in a very real sense, one of the great sports cities in the world.
The announcement also generated significant excitement in Miami's business community. Formula 1 events are among the most lucrative in global sports, drawing high-net-worth attendees from around the world and generating economic impacts that dwarf most other events. Miami was about to get a new annual event that would put it on the global stage in a way that even Art Basel and Ultra had not quite managed.
