Kelly Rowland Brought Breast Cancer Awareness to Monday Night Football — and Miami Was the Stage

October 2010. The Miami Dolphins are hosting the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football, and the halftime show is not going to a legacy rock act or a pyrotechnic spectacle. It is going to Kelly Rowland — and she is bringing breast cancer survivors onto the field with her.

Rowland, then riding the momentum of her solo breakout after years as a founding member of Destiny’s Child, performed a set from LIV — the stadium’s then-new nightclub venue — that included When Love Takes Over , Independent Woman , and Survivor . That last one landed differently that night.

Before the game, Rowland walked the Dolphins Orange Carpet alongside survivors from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, helping the team announce its National Breast Cancer Awareness Month initiatives. NFL Breast Cancer Awareness PSAs featuring Rowland ran throughout the stadium all night.

“I am honored to perform at the Monday Night Football game between the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots,” Rowland said. “Breast cancer awareness is something particularly important to me, and I am thrilled to be working with survivors from the Susan G. Komen For The Cure foundation. I believe everyone should appreciate what these women have overcome in their lives to be with us today.”

Earlier that day, Rowland appeared at the ESPN Chalk Talk — and told us she loves Miami, having recently made the Bath Club her home. This was not a flyover performance. She was here, invested, and it showed.

It was the kind of night that reminded you what this city can be when sport, culture, and purpose converge on the same stage. Sun Life Stadium, packed, on a Monday night in October — and the halftime show was about something real.
