Sarah Fisher: Trailblazer, Team Owner, and the Pink Car Fighting Breast Cancer

IndyCar pioneer Sarah Fisher — the youngest woman ever to compete in the Indianapolis 500, the first female owner/driver in IndyCar Series history, and the fastest woman to qualify for the Indy 500 — was in Miami for the IndyCar Series Championship finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway when Premier Guide Miami's Daedrian McNaughton caught up with her to discuss her Pink Car breast cancer initiative, the challenges of being a female driver, and what it means to own her own team.. Female drivers are a rarity in car racing, and when they do compete they make a statement to the racecar world. Often underrated and underestimated by their male counterparts, that resentment and attitude only pushes them more to compete for titles all over the world.

Sarah Fisher has carved a space in the history of car racing alongside Janet Guthrie and Lyn St. James. Among her many firsts: the youngest woman to compete in the Indianapolis 500 at age 19 in 2000; the first woman to stand on the podium with a third-place finish at Kentucky Speedway; the first woman to run a full IndyCar Series schedule in 2001, the same season she became the first woman to finish runner-up in a major-league open-wheel race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

In 2002, Fisher made history as the first female driver in the 21st century to drive a Formula One car, testing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in an arrangement by personal sponsor TAG Heuer. In 2003, she set the record as the fastest woman to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 with a four-lap average of 229.439 mph. In 2008, she became the first female owner/driver in IndyCar Series history — and the second female owner/driver in the Indy 500 after Janet Guthrie.

While Sarah was in Miami for the IndyCar Series Championship finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Premier Guide Miami caught up with her to discuss her involvement with breast cancer awareness, her Pink Car, and the challenges of being a female driver in a male-dominated sport.

Fisher's Pink Car initiative brought breast cancer awareness directly to the racetrack — a platform she used to champion the cause at every event on the IndyCar calendar. Her willingness to use her visibility as both a driver and a team owner to advocate for women's health set her apart not just as an athlete but as a leader.
