Wynwood Is Building Altars for Celia Cruz, Selena, Dolly Parton, and Jimi Hendrix This Día de los Muertos

Sixteen Wynwood businesses are building ofrendas for the legends they love on the neighborhood's first Ofrenda Trail — a free, self-guided walk running October 30 through November 8, presented by the Wynwood BID in partnership with the Mexican Cultural Institute.

Part of our ongoing curation of what it means to live, love, and play in the Magic City.

From Friday, October 30 through Sunday, November 8, sixteen Wynwood businesses will each build an ofrenda — the candlelit altar of marigolds, photographs, pan de muerto, and favorite foods that welcomes departed loved ones home for a visit. Together they make up the Wynwood Día de los Muertos Ofrenda Trail, a free, self-guided walk presented by the Wynwood Business Improvement District in partnership with the Mexican Cultural Institute of the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami.

The Honorees

The altars cover a remarkable range of figures. Morelia Paletas is building an ofrenda for Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa. The Moxy Miami Wynwood is honoring Selena. Wynwood Shop is remembering Dolly Parton. Jimi Hendrix gets his altar at 27 Club Coffee. Auratherapy pairs Frida Kahlo with the seven chakras. Cotidiano honors Juan Gabriel, El Divo de Juárez. The restaurant Benito Juárez salutes its namesake, the 19th-century president of Mexico. Häagen-Dazs is remembering Reuben and Rose Mattus, the Bronx couple who founded the company in 1960.

The Museum of Graffiti is remembering the graffiti writers the culture has lost. Cha Cha Chá is celebrating Mexican musicians and artists. Jajaja Mexicana is building its altar around a Noche de Calaveras. COYO Taco is dedicating its ofrenda to beloved pets, and SPAW is building one for a single much-loved pet named Major.

How It Works

Each ofrenda sits inside the business, near the front window wherever possible, with a short note on who it honors and why. Hours follow each business — which in Wynwood runs late. The trail is open whenever they are.

Día de los Muertos, observed November 1 and 2, is not a sad holiday. Families in Mexico build ofrendas at home and in cemeteries, set out the food and drink their loved ones liked, and spend the night telling stories about them. The idea is that the dead come back for a visit as long as someone remembers them. The Ofrenda Trail opens that tradition to the whole neighborhood, one storefront at a time.
