Broward Community College: The New River Sisters & Fort Lauderdale

Our team teaches about Mary Brickell and her undisputed role in the founding of Fort Lauderdale, originally known as New River Country. Mary defended her land all the way to the Florida Supreme Court over riparian rights along the river. Historical court records confirm that Mary, not her husband William, boldly negotiated and ran all Brickell family commercial affairs. Free.
