Travel

Pan Am never had a ship. But starting October 30, 2027, you can board one in Miami and spend 28 days living inside the airline's golden age anyway. Holland America Line's Zuiderdam departs PortMiami roundtrip for a Pan Am 100th Anniversary Legendary Voyage — a cruise built around the people, routes, and rituals that made Pan American World Airways the most aspirational way to travel on earth.

The itinerary retraces portions of Pan Am's historic Caribbean and Central American routes: Cartagena, Colón and the Panama Canal, Antigua, Trinidad. These weren't random stops — they were the destinations Pan Am's Flying Clippers served when international air travel was still a novelty reserved for diplomats, executives, and the genuinely adventurous. The cruise puts you ashore in the same places, with excursions designed around what Pan Am meant there.

What's Actually on the Ship

Five aviation historians and storytellers are sailing with the voyage. Linda Freire, co-founder of the Pan Am Museum Foundation, flew as a Pan Am flight attendant before becoming a recruiter and manager — she'll give you the inside view of what the airline's culture actually felt like. David Hinson, the foundation's vice chairman, ran flight attendant training and leadership development. Steve Gray traces Pan Am's visual legacy and the romance of the Flying Clippers. Actor and storyteller Willie Aames covers the pioneering spirit, including the extraordinary Pacific Clipper journey during World War II. David Kliman has logged more than four million airline miles and flew Pan Am extensively — he's bringing his memorabilia collection.

The Clipper Club — Pan Am's network of private airport lounges that became synonymous with premium travel — gets a shipboard recreation. Guests will encounter moments inspired by the original: the atmosphere, the hospitality, the sense that the journey itself was the point. The culinary program leans into it too. Pan Am-era menus are back: Cocktail de Crevettes with Louis dressing, Broiled Filet Mignon Maître d'Hôtel, Sole en Croûte with crabmeat filling in puff pastry, Soufflé Grand Marnier. The cocktail menu includes The Pan Am Cocktail — light white rum, Campari, orgeat, lemon, egg white, aromatic bitters — and The Clipper Cocktail, which was actually served aboard the flying boats.

The Shore Excursions Worth Noting

In Cartagena, the Pan Am-curated tour explores the city in classic roadsters — Cartagena was a Pan Am destination during the era when it was known for world-class emeralds and jet-set appeal. In Colón, the excursion connects the Agua Clara Locks and the Panama Canal Railway to the transportation network that made Pan Am the logical choice for anyone crossing the region. In Antigua, a 'High Point' tour to Shirley Heights follows the sightlines Pan Am navigators used to guide their aircraft into port. In Trinidad, the 'Wings of Trinidad' tour visits Chaguaramas — the former Pan Am flying boat base where the Clippers actually landed — and the Chaguaramas Military History & Aerospace Museum.
