The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and Zoetic Stage are kicking off the 2026–27 Theater Up Close season with God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton and directed by Zoetic Artistic Director Stuart Meltzer. Previews begin November 5, with opening night on November 6, running through November 22, 2026 in the intimate Carnival Studio Theater inside the Ziff Ballet Opera House.
Described as a "comedy of manners — without the manners," the play centers on two sets of well-to-do Brooklyn parents who meet to resolve a playground altercation between their 11-year-old sons. What begins as a polite, civilized conversation quickly devolves into a night of name-calling, physical altercations, and alcohol-fueled hysteria. The Guardian called it a "deliciously savage satire."
Originally written in French, Hampton's English translation earned critically acclaimed runs in London's West End and on Broadway, winning an Olivier Award for Best Play and three Tony Awards — Best Play, Best Actress in a Play, and Best Director of a Play.
Zoetic Stage's production is cast entirely with local talent: Carbonell Award-winner Iain Batchelor, Jordyn Moone, Justin Packard, and Sarah Rome Guerra. The play marks the company's 17th season premiere at the Arsht Center.
"Zoetic Stage is proud to kick off its 17th season at the Adrienne Arsht Center with Yasmina Reza's scathing and hysterical commentary on the breakdown of civilized society," said Artistic Director Stuart Meltzer. "God of Carnage is simply one of the funniest plays of this century — and one of the most revered."
Tickets are $67–$73 and are available now at ArshtCenter.org or by calling the Arsht box office at (305) 949-6722. The Arsht provides accessible seating, complimentary assistive listening devices, sign language interpretation, open captioning, and audio description at select performances.
