Good Boys on Board: PBSO Therapy Dogs Bring World Mental Health Day to Brightline West Palm Beach

Brightline's West Palm Beach station got a little warmer this week when PBSO's certified therapy canine teams made two days of stops for World Mental Health Day — giving travelers and staff a moment to breathe, connect, and pet a very good dog.

If you passed through Brightline's West Palm Beach station on October 9 or 10, you may have noticed something unusual — and unusually good. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office brought its certified therapy canine teams through the station for a two-day World Mental Health Day activation, and the response from travelers and Brightline employees was exactly what you'd expect when a rescue dog in a vest walks into a room.

The PBSO Therapy Canine Unit, established in 2020, has grown to 14 certified canine-handler teams. Every dog in the unit is a rescue that has undergone specialized training and certification to provide comfort and emotional support across a range of community settings — from schools and hospitals to, now, train stations. The dogs moved through the station freely, stopping to meet passengers, sit with travelers, and generally make everyone's day measurably better.

The activation was part of Brightline Cares, the company's corporate citizenship program focused on community engagement and well-being throughout the corridors it serves. For South Florida commuters who ride Brightline between Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, and Orlando, the program reflects a broader effort to make the train experience feel like more than just transit — and a therapy dog meet-and-greet is a pretty compelling argument.

World Mental Health Day, observed globally on October 10, focuses on raising awareness and reducing stigma around mental health. The presence of therapy dogs in public spaces has been shown to reduce anxiety, lower stress hormones, and create spontaneous moments of human connection — all things that are easy to take for granted until a certified rescue dog in a sheriff's vest sits down next to you at a train station and reminds you to slow down.
