South Florida's museum circuit does not slow down in the fall — it accelerates. With Art Basel Miami Beach arriving in December, institutions across Miami-Dade and Broward are stacking their most ambitious programming of the year. Here is a comprehensive guide to what is on, what is opening, and what is worth planning around.

ICA Miami: Friedrich Kunath, Diego Singh, and Family Fest

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami is anchoring its Art Basel season with two major solo exhibitions. Friedrich Kunath: I'll Romanticize This Later opens December 1 in ICA Miami's Expansion Building — the German artist's first solo museum exhibition in the United States. Fusing German Romanticism with American pop culture, Kunath's paintings, sculptures, and installations explore longing and melancholy with a wit that disarms. The show runs through January 22, 2027, and includes an interactive digital environment. On the same day, ICA opens Diego Singh: Deeper and Deeper, the first solo museum exhibition for the Miami-based Argentine artist. Organized by color — blue, red, and bright yellow — Singh's intensely layered canvases carry the ghost of Argentina's Dirty War within their abstraction. On view through April 11, 2027.

Also on view: Manuel Chavajay: Xojowi ja qa tee ruachulew (Mother Earth Dances) through November 22, featuring the Tz'utujil Maya artist's paintings made with marine oil and traditional embroidery patterns depicting Lake Atitlán. And the stairwell commission Naudline Pierre opens November 30, replacing Igshaan Adams' tapestry installation with a sequence of monumental paintings depicting water, nymphs, and scenes of bathing — Pierre's largest work to date.

For families: ICA's Family Fest celebrates "We Are Miami" with neighborhood art expeditions, hands-on art-making stations, and a 40-minute live performance by Fantasy Theatre. Tickets are $50 for adults and $15 for kids; children under 3 are free. The I Create Art Workshop Series continues with a Learning Watercolors session led by Havana-born, Miami-based artist Alejandro Piñeiro Bello — $50 per person, lunch included, minimum one adult and one child per registration. ICA Miami is at 61 NE 41st Street, Miami Design District. Free general admission courtesy of City National Bank of Florida.

Lowe Art Museum: Young, Gifted, and Black Opens October 23

Young, Gifted, and Black: The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art opens October 23 at the Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables and runs through April 24, 2027. Showcasing over fifty works by contemporary artists of African descent — organized by Bernard Lumpkin and co-curated by Antwaun Sargent and Matt Wycoff — the exhibition takes its title from Nina Simone's 1970 anthem and places younger-generation voices in dialogue with established predecessors. Members' Preview is Thursday, October 22 from 6–7 PM; the Opening Reception follows from 7–9 PM, free and open to the public.

Also currently on view: Let the Picture Lead: Helen Frankenthaler and Her Circle (through February 6, 2027), celebrating a landmark gift of prints from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation; Morel Doucet: The Things We Carry (through March 27, 2027), rooted in the Haitian-American artist's Miami upbringing and Caribbean diaspora experience; and Dustin Yellin: Psychogeographies (through August 7, 2027), multi-media glass sculptures that oscillate between two and three dimensions.

Upcoming programs include a Family Art Workshop on October 24 (10:30–11:30 AM), an Expert Tour in Spanish on October 31, and the flagship Art Basel event Bubbles and Brunch featuring vanessa german on December 6 (9 AM–noon, free). Save the date for the Evening of Art gala on February 20, 2027 — the Lowe's most important annual fundraiser, featuring the Palette Project silent auction. General admission: $325. The Lowe is at 1301 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables.

MOCA North Miami: Geoffrey Holder's Visual Art Gets Its Due

Opening during Miami Art Week 2026, MOCA North Miami presents Geoffrey Holder: Black Magic (November 12, 2026 – April 4, 2027) — the first museum survey to center the visual art of Geoffrey Holder, internationally celebrated for his achievements in dance, theater, and film. Featuring over 60 works in painting, drawing, collage, and sculpture — many never before publicly shown — the exhibition reframes Holder's visual art as the foundation of his prolific creative life. Guest curated by Erica Moiah James, PhD.

On the last Friday of every month, MOCA's beloved free outdoor Jazz at MOCA series continues on the MOCA Plaza. October 30 features the Mike Gerber Quartet — an accomplished jazz pianist whose career has included performances with Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Jaco Pastorius, and Pat Metheny. Seating starts at 7 PM; concert begins at 8 PM. Free admission. MOCA is at 770 NE 125th Street, North Miami.

Museum of Miami: Free Wednesdays, Cemetery Tours, and the 1926 Hurricane

The Museum of Miami (formerly HistoryMiami) is running Free After-School Wednesdays every week through the school year — open to families with elementary and K-8 students from 2–5 PM, with a guided tour of Tropical Dreams: A People's History of South Florida at 3 PM (limited to 20 people, advance registration required). The museum is at 101 West Flagler Street, downtown Miami.

The current anchor exhibition is Caught in the Eye: Remembering the 1926 Hurricane (through April 11, 2027), marking the centennial of the storm that ended Miami's first great boom. Drawn from the archive — photo albums, newspapers, film, and letters — the exhibition tells the story through the people who lived it. A Curator's Tour with Resident Historian Dr. Paul S. George is scheduled for November 21 (2–3 PM, free with museum admission).

Halloween programming includes a Spooktacular Miami City Cemetery Walking Tour on October 30 at 5 PM (families, ages 7+; $25 members / $35 non-members / $15 children 14 and under) and an Annual Miami City Cemetery Walking Tour the same evening at 6:30 PM with Dr. George and Ingrid Argueta. Upcoming community events include a talk on Normandy Shores and North Beach history on October 22 at 6:30 PM (free, Normandy Shores Clubhouse) and a Yiddish performance titled Dorem on October 22 at 7:30 PM at the JCC in North Miami Beach ($20, $5 discount for museum members).

NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale: Ragnar Kjartansson and Wifredo Lam's Legacy

NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale opens Ragnar Kjartansson: Sunday Without Love on November 15 (through April 11, 2027). The Icelandic artist's single-channel video installation — a 19-minute loop of performers on an Italian plateau repeatedly singing a chorus of cynical resignation against an idyllic pastoral backdrop — evokes Romantic-era painting while simultaneously undermining it. Also on view: Wifredo Lam's Legacy (through March 14, 2027), drawn exclusively from the museum's collection, tracing the Cuban master's influence on subsequent generations of artists; and Joel Meyerowitz: Aftermath (through February 14, 2027), 28 large-scale photographs of Ground Zero taken over nine months following September 11, 2001.

Upcoming events: FREE Fort Lauderdale Neighbor Day on October 25 (noon–5 PM, free for Fort Lauderdale residents); Beaux Arts Presents: Stardust & Spurs on October 29 (6–10 PM); Free First Thursday on November 5 (11 AM–7 PM); Museums on Us weekend November 7–8 (free admission for Bank of America cardholders); and the Urs Fischer Art Talk on November 14 (3–4 PM). NSU Art Museum is at One East Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale.

Locust Projects: Edison Peñafiel's Tides and Passages During Art Week

Miami's longest-running nonprofit alternative art space presents Edison Peñafiel: Tides and Passages — Chapter I: MARE MAGNVM (November 17 – December 15, 2026). The Ecuadorian-born, Miami-based artist's immersive 360-degree video surround depicts a stylized, monochromatic sea populated by fourteen boats carrying eighty-one figures in a perpetual loop — vessels constructed of found objects including wood, oil drums, and tires, faces hidden behind papier-mâché masks. A Miami Art Week press preview (Cafecitos y Pastelitos with the artist) is scheduled for December 1, 10 AM–noon; a public celebration co-hosted with MAD Arts follows on December 5, 7–10 PM. Chapter II opens at Locust Projects in June 2027. Locust Projects is at 3852 N Miami Avenue, Wynwood.

Miami Children's Museum: Halloween All Month

Miami Children's Museum is running Halloween programming every weekend in October. Not-So-Scary Halloween continues October 24–25 with a Mad Scientist Lab, Haunted House, mini pumpkin decorating, and performances of Creepy Pair of Underwear by the in-house theater troupe. Mini Monster Monday is October 26 with trick-or-treating at noon and 3:30 PM. The grand finale is MiChi-Boo! on October 31 — an all-day Halloween celebration with costume contest, Haunted House, and live DJ. The museum is at 980 MacArthur Causeway, Watson Island.

Plan Your Museum Circuit

The density of programming across these institutions makes a multi-stop museum day entirely feasible. The Museum of Miami and ICA Miami are both accessible via the Metromover and Miami Free Trolley network. NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is a straight shot up I-95 or via Brightline from MiamiCentral. For Art Basel week in December, ICA, Locust Projects, and the Jewish Museum of Florida all have major programming running simultaneously — plan accordingly.
