Art Basel Stays in Miami Beach — New Five-Year Deal Runs Through 2031
After 18 months of tense negotiations and a very public threat to relocate to Las Vegas, Art Basel and the City of Miami Beach have signed a new five-year contract. The fair is staying through 2031 — and the city cut the rent in half to make it happen.

For the better part of a year and a half, South Florida held its breath. MCH Group — the Swiss parent company behind the world's most prestigious art fair — made the threat explicit during contract negotiations with the City of Miami Beach: meet our terms, or we take the fair to Las Vegas. Miami Beach blinked first. The city just approved a new five-year Art Basel contract running through 2031.
What the City Gave Up — and What It Got Back
The deal halves Art Basel's rent to 00,000 — a significant concession from a city that had been pushing for more revenue from an event that generates roughly 0 million annually and draws around 80,000 attendees. In exchange, the city secured police and fire service credits, barred rival fairs from the Miami Beach Convention Center for 30 days on either side of the event, and granted Basel veto power over events held within the roughly one-square-mile Art Basel zone surrounding the convention center.
Critics Say the City Left Money on the Table
Not everyone is celebrating. Miami collector and civic figure Norman Braman is among those who believe the city could have negotiated better terms — particularly given MCH Group's recent return to profitability after years of pandemic-era losses. The argument: with the fair's finances stabilized and Miami Beach's cultural cachet at an all-time high, the city held more leverage than the final deal reflects.
The 24th Edition Opens December 2
Whatever the politics, the fair is coming back. Art Basel Miami Beach opens its 24th edition to VIPs on December 2, with public days to follow. The event remains the anchor of Miami Art Week — the most concentrated convergence of galleries, collectors, curators, and satellite fairs in the Western Hemisphere. For the city, keeping it through 2031 means keeping that economic engine: the hotel bookings, the restaurant reservations, and the international attention that descends on South Florida every December.
